If there is one thing we can all agree on today, it is that the world feels increasingly unstable. Whether we are looking at the rapid rise of AI, the shifting global economy, or the constant noise of social media, the ground beneath our feet seems to be moving.
In military circles, they have a term for this: a VUCA world. It stands for:
Volatility: Speed and turbulence of change.
Uncertainty: Lack of predictability.
Complexity: Confusion from many moving parts.
Ambiguity: Lack of clarity in meaning.
But as I look at our families and our children, I realize this isn’t just a military
term—it is the reality of modern parenting.
We often fear times of crisis, but I want to offer you a different perspective. The scriptures tell us that God allows a “shaking” of things that can be moved so that the things that cannot be shaken may remain.
I once heard a story of a child scared by a thunderstorm. His father repeatedly assured him that God was with him and so he didn’t have to be afraid of being alone in his bedroom. After a few attempts of reassurance, the child told his father, “I want God with skin on.” That is the best definition of a parent I have ever heard. In a volatile world, our physical and emotional presence is the greatest security we can give our children.
Is your home a refuge? A sanctuary is a place where children feel safe from predatory
values and the pressures of the outside world. We must be intentional watchmen,
guarding what enters our homes through the “digital windows” of our screens.
We are living in an era of information overkill, but knowledge is just data; wisdom is
doing. Jesus taught that the wise man is the one who hears and does. We must
model a life of action so our children build their own lives on the Rock.
Our goal isn’t just to help our children survive this world, but to thrive in it—to be like
Daniel, who stood firm in a hostile culture because his foundations were laid deep in
the truth. Let us be intentional. Let us be present. Let us build on the Rock.
